Virgin Galactic’s spaceport, Spaceport America, has christened its first runway. The New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) on Saturday dedicated the nearly two-mile long “Governor Bill Richardson Spaceway” at Spaceport America with Governor Bill Richardson, Sir Richard Branson and about 30 of more than 380 Virgin Galactic future astronauts in attendance.
The rest of the facilities at Spaceport America in New Mexico are still under construction. At least, however, SpaceShipTwo now has a home, so to speak, or at least an official home. Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of the Virgin Group, Virgin Galactic’s parent company, estimates that sub-orbital launches, costing $200,000 a ticket, are still nine to 18 months away.
A 36-year-old Sun Valley man was sentenced Wednesday morning to serve 10 days in jail and two years on probation for killing an elderly Reno pedestrian on May 8.
Authorities said Charles Frederick Howard was making a call on his cell phone and had just pushed the dial button when his Chevrolet Tahoe struck 82-year-old Frederick Douglass Murchison as he was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection of Kietzke Lane and Roberts Street.
Howard earlier had pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor offense of vehicular manslaughter.
Reno Municipal Judge Paul Hickman suspended Howard’s 180-day jail sentence and ordered he spend 10 days in jail, two years probation and 100 hours of community service. Howard’s driver’s license was also revoked for one year and he was ordered to refrain from using drugs or alcohol.
Howard apologized to Murchison’s family and expressed extreme remorse. Murchison’s family said their religious faith has helped them through their grief.
“It’s not clear just what Jamison said to provoke Greathouse to look up his address, arm herself, get in a car, and drive five hours to kill him, but it must have been pretty bad.”
Sometimes, crazy doesn’t need a reason.
These are the lessons of the saga of Breana Greathouse, 25, who drove several hundred miles from Kansas City, Missouri to Ottumwa, Iowa, to shoot a certain Forrest Jamison, whom she blamed for posting derogatory comments about her on the Internet. Fortunately her Midwestern odyssey, which the Coen Bros. might want to consider adapting for the screen, ended in failure when she was arrested by Ottumwa police for waving her gun around like the unhinged maniac she is.
Also, they arrested her mom, Susan Greathouse, 50, for threatening Jamison over the phone.
It’s not clear just what Jamison said to provoke Greathouse to look up his address, arm herself, get in a car, and drive five hours to kill him, but it must have been pretty bad. I searched for her name on Google and came up with a bunch of links to videos with unflattering titles, like “Breanna Greathouse of Kansas City Gets Dissed UGHH,” but the videos themselves had all been taken down.
